Characters:

Laeri, a self-described scribe/courier from Tarabon, who has recently heard some very interesting things about a Domani woman matching Lisendra Thari's description. He intends to test the truth of them.

Lisendra, a beautiful young woman from Arad Doman, who claims to be the daughter of a formerly noble House that lost everything, but actually ran away from her husband (according to a rumor Laeri uncovered). On her way to Tar Valon she was in a fight and killed two men, members of powerful local families, in the Black Hills. There are witnesses to this, though they haven't turned up in Tar Valon to identify her yet. She is seeking to get a fresh start as the first professional Gleewoman in history.

Anatole: Lord of a minor House in Murandy; he recently hired Lisendra as his Bard. They are said to be romantically involved, to some extent.

William: Tavernkeeper, owner of the site of this meeting.

Creel: A wandering noble who happens to walk in at the right moment.

[As we open, Anatole, Lisendra, and Laeri are all sitting at the bar. William is waiting on them]

Lisendra smiles and says, "I would like a wine. Something good."

Laeri asks William, "Do you have any cold milk?"

Anatole scoots her wine over to her.

William nods. He fills a mug with milk, and passes it to Laeri

Laeri takes it and even says "Thanks." He seems in a good mood today.

William says "You're welcome."

Lisendra smiles over at Anatole as she takes a sip.

Anatole takes a sipe of his brandya nd glances around.

Laeri looks over at Lisendra and Anatole and says, "Has the Light shone on you today?"

Lisendra looks over to Laeri and says, "Yes it has. You?"

Anatole raises an eyebrow. "Why um... yes... I believe I've been out in the daylight... and there are always lanterns in my rooms and candles, they make good light."

Laeri takes it without blinking. "Fine, fine... and I am feeling particularly fortunate today, myself. I am learning many interesting things."

Lisendra smiles and says, "I am glad you are well."

Lisendra takes another sip.

Anatole takes another sip of his brandy.

William says "Would anyone like anything to eat?"

Laeri smiles at her. "Thank you." He suddenly pulls out his pencil case and begins scribbling something on a scrap of paper.

Lisendra smiles and says, "Do you have any Domani food?"

William says "Yes, I do."

William walks off to the kitchen.

William comes back with the dish in hand and places it in front of Lisandra.

Lisendra smiles. "I haven't had any since I left home. Thank you."

William says "You're welcome."

William walks back behind the bar.

Laeri finishes scribbling something on his slip of paper and folds it in half. He puts his pencil case away.

Anatole runs a hand through his hair as he takes a gulp of brandy, finishing what's in the glass. "Fast cook" he mutters. "Could I have some more brandy?"

William says "Sure."

Lisendra produces two thin sticks wraped in a thin silk cloth and starts to eat in a way strange to any who have not seen it before.

William fills another glass with the liquor, and passes it to Anatole.

Long distance to Lisendra: Laeri is about to give you a note saying A Lady And Two Men In Black Hills

Anatole nods to William. "Thanks." He takes a sip and begins watching Lisendra, tilting his head to one side and raising an eyebrow.

William has arrived.

Laeri passes his note to Lisendra. "Excuse me," he says politely, "I'd like your opinion on a small matter."

William says "You're welcome."

Lisendra looks at the note while taking a sip and then spits it back out suddenly and refolds the note and looks at Laeri with a strange frown. "I think you should ask someone else." She pushes the note back to him, almost desperately.

William nods to the customers and says "Excuse me for a minute."

William has left.

Laeri takes it. "You're the only Domani I have the honor to know, lady," he says in a soft tone. "I would appreciate your advice on this little thing I heard about Arad Doman customs."

William has arrived.

Anatole looks from Lisendra to Laeri. "may I see that sir?"

Lisendra frowns firmly and looks down at her food as if she is no longer hungry at all.

Laeri is holding the note and looks at Anatole and then Lisendra, raising his eyebrows as he waits for her opinion.

William says "Excuse me, but is there something wrong with the food?"

Lisendra looks up and says, "No... Nothing is wrong with the food." She looks back at Laeri and says, "An interesting phrase. I do not think it is Domani in origin if that is what you meant."

Laeri says, "I'm sorry to interrupt your meal... please, go on. I just wanted to ask you about a foolish story I once heard, that was supposed to explain the phrase." He glances around the room. "The story is... odd... enough that I'd rather not be heard saying it by everyone." He actually looks embarrassed.

Lisendra raises an eyebrow and then frowns and looks over to Anatole, "Would you excuse me for a moment?"

Creel has connected.

Laeri gulps down some of his milk and carries the mug away from the bar.

Lisendra picks up her meal and the sticks and stands.

You stand and leave Bar.

Lisendra stands and leaves Bar.

Creel grins at Lisendra

Laeri gestures toward a far table politely.

You sit down at Oak Wood Table.

Lisendra sits down at Oak Wood Table.

Creel sits down at Window Table1.

Laeri slides into the seat across from Lisendra and pulls out the note. He begins speaking to her too softly to be heard elsewhere.

Lisendra takes the note and looks as if she is about to walk though fire but is willing to do so to get whatever it is that this is about done.

Anatole knocks down the rest of the brandy and slides the glass to the barkeep, along with a few coins in payment and tips. He gives a nod and re-perches his hand on the hilt of his sword before striding towards the exit.

Anatole opens the double-doors and leaves Will's Tavern.

Anatole has left.

At your table, Laeri says, almost gently, "Now, Lady Lisendra Thari, may I speak frankly?"

Lisendra closes her eyes as Anatole walks out as if it literally hurt her.

At your table, Laeri waits.

At your table, Lisendra nods slowly, eyes still closed.

Creel winces, noticing the interplay between Lisendra and Anatole.

At your table, Laeri says, "I have spoken with a survivor of a certain incident in the Black Hills, and he gave me an excellent description of a young Domani woman who killed two men."

Lisendra visually flinches at whatever it is Laeri said.

Laeri looks apologetic, you notice.

Creel gets up from the table.

Creel stands and leaves Window Table1.

At your table, Lisendra, flinching, says, "It was an accident... I didn't mean to kill them."

At your table, Laeri shrugs. "That's not the way he and a couple of friends tell it... should I bring them before the local authorities so their story can be compared with yours?"

At your table, Lisendra shakes and says, "Please don't..." She sounds very sad.

Creel tentatively approaches Lisendra, not smiling, no longer flirting, looking apollogetic.

At your table, Laeri sighs. "I do have a certain responsibility...."

Lisendra throws a glance at Creel that says more blatantly then words ever could, "Go away."

Laeri barely seems to notice Creel, his eyes remain focused on Lisendra.

Creel sighs...

At your table, Lisendra looks back and says, "What do you want?" She says it plainly.

At your table, Laeri smiles slightly. "It's good to see you're a practical young woman, who sees to the heart of these matters. Some noble ladies would faint away and delay me no end..."

At your table, Lisendra actually smiles and says slyly, "Just get to the demands."

At your table, Laeri says idly, "A woman after my own heart... but we're not talking about my heart. How much of your family's wealth did you bring with you?"

Lisendra glances around slowly and then sighs.

At your table, Lisendra sighs, "Overall we have enough. But I have no claim to any of it except some land on the River."

At your table, Lisendra sighs again and says, "I have about 400 gold left."

At your table, Laeri looks disappointed. "Cash in hand is so... so universal. Easy to spend. But if you want to throw in a little land... ah? 400?" he ponders.

Lisendra looks down at her golden ring and then back at Laeri.

At your table, Lisendra says "I also have this ring."

At your table, Laeri follows her eyes and shakes his head. "I don't know that I need to deprive you of your jewelry... people might notice. How much land, exactly, is 'some?'"

Creel walks towards the door.

Lisendra looks up and says, "Wait!"

Creel turns, "Me?"

Lisendra looks at Creel and says, "Don't leave...."

Creel looks around, "Yes, of course..."

Laeri looks up, startled.

Creel moves towards Lisendra again.

Lisendra glares at Laeri and pulls a thick bag of gold from her small bag and lays it in frount of Laeri and says for all to hear, "That is all you git. And if that is not enough go ahead and tell the world." She moves to stand up.

Lisendra stands and leaves Oak Wood Table.

Lisendra has departed.

Laeri looks at the bag in surprise and then after Lisendra. "Wait! Perhaps you misunderstood..."

Lisendra looks up at Creel with a frown and says turning the frown to a small grin, "Thank you for not leaving." Turns to Laeri, "That is it. No more. Tell all you wish but that is all."

Creel takes out one of his daggers and begins flipping it back and forth across his hand...making it walk across his knuckles and then roll across the back of his hand. Suddenly another appears in his other hand and it mimics the first.

Laeri slides the bag into his cloak and looks sad. He glances at Creel and muses sadly, "She didn't seem to understand about the old debt..."

Creel flourishes and both daggers dissappear. One moment later they reappear in his hands and resume their dance.

Lisendra smiles softly and says, "Yes... And that is all of it."

Laeri stands up and starts toward the door. He looks at Creel's performance and says, "Very good. You could make money with that act."

Creel grins, "I dont need any money, thanks."

Creel throws both daggers at once, each planting itself approximately five feet off the floor, one in the left doorjam, one in the right.

Laeri shrugs. "That's easily said, but you never know..." He is next to the door now.

Lisendra pages: Sorry but that is how she would handle it... She thinks she has lost Anatole she doesn't care...

Lisendra's eyes widen and she looks at Creel with a new light.

Laeri gives Lisendra a brief bow and heads outside.

You open the double-doors and exit Will's Tavern.
