Setting : Practice Yard, White Tower
Characters:
Coliena Sedai of the Brown Ajah - Teacher
Arwen Gaidin, Warder of Trelaine - Other Teacher
Accepted Thais - Student
Arwen saunters into the practice yard; pausing, he inclines his head at Coliena and Thais and Karaul, pausing to stretch before making his way towards them.
Thais looks up as the Sedai enters, beaming a smile as she stands and curtseys, "hello, Sedai Coliena."
Karaul drops the point of his practice blade to the ground, dipping a respectful nod to the Gaidin and Sedai, taking the chance to regain the breath that he'd lost during his practice. He speaks nothing and just awaits anything from the two.
Coliena rubs her arms briefly and nods, "Good day, Accepted. Karaul." She notices Arwen, still her expression quite bewildered, "And Arwen Gaidin. Seems I've been paired to teach this class with you." She sounds... nervous. As if this isn't something she's used to doing.
Thais smiles and sits back down, settling comfortably, hands smoothing ehr dress as she waits.
Arwen nods, "Tis what I noticed. Want me to handle the preliminaries, Coliena?" As he speaks, he moves over to join the woman, pausing to assess the 'audience'.
Karaul steps over to stand nearby the Accepted, his breath having been thoroughly regained now and moderate relaxation finding his body again. A stray hand wipes the sweat from his brow as he waits, still standing.
Coliena nods briefly, "Of course. You are likely more qualified for the first part then myself. I've read books on battles, but have only experienced it first hand a few times." She pauses and frowns. Does she even remember the weaves she's supposed to teach? She pulls a book out of the pouch at her belt and starts to flip through the lesson plan that she picked up when she heard she had this class.
Thais looks between Gaidin and Sedai, considering both before turning to the Gaidin, and pulling out a notebook and quill, and a small pot of ink. She writes furiously, the tip of her tongue caught between ehr teeth as she works.
Karaul smirks softly as he listens to the Sedai and Gaidin's exchange, though keeps anything but a neutral expression from resting upon his face in a more permanent manner. His body tiredly slumps a touch as eyes shift lazily between Gaidin and Sedai, waiting for the next bit of words to come from them.
Arwen nows, "In battle, cooperation is important. As I described in the class on Shadowlore, Thais, the main weakness with Trollocs is their inability to really think or work together. Cooperation is essential, especailly between Sedai and Gaidin." He motions, "The reasoning is obvious-- it'd be a sorry Sedai who blasted at Trollocs with Fire only to harm her Gaidin, wouldn't it?"
Thais nods, looking up from her notes, "Yes it would, Arwen Gaidin. Like cutting off your arm, ebcause you have a cut on your finger."
Coliena doesn't speak at all as she flips through the pages of her book, looking over the detailed descriptions of the weaves she hasn't used in at least five years.
Karaul merely shrugs slightly, but continues to listen in his usual, relatively lazy demeanor. Eyes merely follow the sound of words, drifting from face to face.
Arwen nods, "The key things to do in a battle are attack, defend, and retreat. Each of these are done at different times in a battle. As Karaul can tell you, the reasoning for this varies with the person. For instance, in a battle where I'm outnumbered, I can either attack, defend, or flee. The whys and wherefores depend on /circumstance/. If I'm heavily outnumbered, I flee. If I'm slightly outnumbered, I attack aggressively and hope to knock out some quickly, and if that doesn't work, I slip into a defensive stance."
Karaul chuckles lightly as Arwen finishes, nodding slowly as he takes a moment to add a few words of his own. "One learns to be able to gauge a situation ... though I've never had to rely on such things entirely, myself." he says with a small smirk, sighing as he settles into his stance again.
Arwen motions, "What also makes a difference is terrain. If they are attacking from a slope, and there's a hill near /me/, I retreat to the hill so they have to run up the hill to /me/...if it's that sort of battle."
Coliena glances up briefly and says nothing a little while longer, though it looks like she might have something she might want to say, but decides against it. No one wants to listen to a Brown ramble.
Thais nods, continuing with her notes. Three options in battle. She swings her feet above the dirt ground, redipping ehr quill, before she continues.
Arwen nows, "Simple things can affect a battle. Wetting the field so they have to slog through mud. Raising a dustdevil, so they cannot see. A strong wind in their faces can mess up arrows and other bowshot." He considers, "I believe it's your turn, Coliena."
Karaul grins slightly and turns eyes casually over to Coliena, a brow raised some as interest finds him. For some time, he's wondered what the tower would have to say about using the One power in battle ... Grin remains upon his lips as he awaits the Sedai's words.
Thais nods and looks up from her notebook, setting it on the bench beside her, turning ehr attention to the Sedai, hands moving to rest folded in her lap.
Coliena blinks, "Already? But you haven't..." she trails off. She has no wish to try to speak down to another Aes Sedai's Gaidin, expecially not a Green's Gaidin. "It is true that simple things can change the course of a battle, and it all depends on the curcumstances. For example, back in the Trolloc Wars, an Aes Sedai and her Gaidin, as well as a small army of about a hundred armed men held off seven fists of Trollocs and three Fades. The way they did so is by making the Fade -think- that they had more Aes Sedai and men then they actually had. The Aes Sedai blanketed the sky above them with thick fog, so ravens and crows could not spy and tell the Fade their numbers, while the men pretended to set up walls of wire and traps for defense. In actuallity they did not have any wire, or walls, or any shovels to dig the pits they pretended to dig with, but the Trollocs and the Fades were too far away to see, and the ravens could not see well enough due to the fog. The Sedai and her Gaidin held off those for a twenty days before renforcements arrive." She pauses briefly, then adds, "But of course there are other ways. The power can be used in battle to help turn the tide when the battle is offensive, or defensive, or even when you are trying to retreat."
Thais nods, picking back up her notebook and jotting down key points as the Sedai speaks, glad that this Sedai isn't one of the many who talk so fast you can't ever take good notes.
Arwen nods at this; he lets Coliena continue to speak, his expression polite as he crosses his arms.
Karaul sighs tiredly as he listens to the Sedai's words, though eyes remain focussed upon her. For a man who tries to look like he doesn't care, at least he does listen. He nods now and then as he listens, and eyes stray to a side of the yard momentarily now and then, but in general sit upon her as she speaks.
Coliena continues in the same slow voice, "Many factors are important before using the One Power in battle. Line of sight is one. If you can't see the enemy it will be very hard to hit them with weaves. It can be done, but you might hit innocents or people on your side as well." She pauses to check her lesson plan before continueing.
Thais works diligently, doing ehr best to get as many of the Sedai's words as she can, shifting to be a bit more comfortable on the decidedly uncomfortable bench.
Coliena continues slowly again, aware that Thais is trying to copy her words and giving her fair time to do so between sentances, "It is also very important to be aware of the activities around you. Often, if you are in a battle that you were prepared for, you will not be alone. Aes Sedai do not go to the Blight border for example without another sister at least, and it is always best to work together with that sister, to insure that your performance is optimal. Communication on the battle field is very important. If one person tries to fight the battle entirely by themselves they will likely indanger the rest of their team."
Karaul nods lightly, eyes once again drifting aimlessly to, this time, a bird twittering in the distance. His right hand raises to toss one of his long braids to his back, giving it an irritable tug before the hand drops idly to the pommel of his practice sword again, at the same time his eyes fall yet again on the Sedai.
Thais nods, copying as best she can, but the trainees movements cause her to lift her head, and the look she gives him is at beat highly irritated. A frown purses ehr lips and then she goes back to copying.
Karaul frowns a touch as he sees the look that he garners from Thais, so with a sigh, he tries a little bit harder. A little bit. His attentions at least do not drift away with the slightest desire, but he tries to make the degree of his listening show in his manner more then usual.
Coliena frowns at Karaul herself and says, "If you do not want the lesson then you do not have to have it, Karaul. I would rather not waste my time teaching this class to someone who does not seem at all interested. At least pretend to be interested." She finishes with her rant and looks quite irritated expecially when she sees it's Thais' look that makes the most apparent impact. She does continue the lesson with a few sentances though, "Also remember that it is important to not use the power friviously, so not to tire yourself too quickly and make it impossible for you to weave important weaves at a critical moment."
Meanwhile, back at Accepted Central, the Accepted in question continues to copy, pausing every now and again to pick up a bit more ink, so missed any look of irritation, or upset that finds her, feet scuffing the ground as she leans forward to write.
Karaul lets out a small breath as he hears Coliena's words, but offers nothing more then a nod in response to them. And he's not about to appear ashamed or embaressed, so just continues on as if nothing had been said.
Coliena continues in a soft voice, looking at her book a few times for help. Her mind is somewhat distracted from the lesson, "When you work your weaves you must use common sense. Do not use weaves that will tire you out easily. Small, single flow weaves are best, and save the larger ones for more serious threats. Average channelers can only work actively with the Power for an hour before beginning to tire, and the revivication weave will not restore a weakened channeler, since this exhaustion can only be cured with time and rest. "
Thais slows her pace a little bit now, rolling ehr wrist to loosen it a bit, nodding to ehrself at the words, having already been told something like that once.
Coliena takes a deep breath as she sees what is next. She hopes she's up for this, "Now we will go into actual battleweaves. The Trainees need to be here for this because it is good for a Trainee to get used to the Power being used around him. We use four powers in battleweaves. Air, Water, Fire and Earth. And also in some cases a combination of the four. Spirit weaves are not commonly used in battle."
Thais smiles, as the lesson finally comes to the part she's been looking forward to and she sets aside her notebook, looking up to the Sedai and watching attentively.
Karaul frowns at the mention of him needing to get used to the use of the power about him, taking a small, reserved step back instinctively. As he wipes the frown away from his face, he tries to mask his reaction some by adjusting the positioning of his hands upon the pommel of his blade, eyes resting upon them as well.
Coliena sighs at Karaul, then smiles at Thais, seeing how excited she seems to be. "First I will show you the weaves used in Air. These at least I can handle without help, but I may need some assisstance with the others. I was never very strong in the Power." She embraces the source, and to Thais' eyes has the glow of Saidar around her. "Some of these weaves you might have already learned in lesser amounts and can have useful applications in battle." She of course keeps her book handy, for referance.
Karaul ever so slowly raises his eyes to the two, just assuming that both have probably embraced the source. His body takes on a slightly defensive manner to it, eyes moving from one to the other slowly, as if expecting to find himself bound in air without a moments notice.
Thais nods, scooting forward on the bench, a smile playing on her lips as she nods, the glow of Saidar surrounding her as she prepares to watch the weaves, eyes bright as she focuses on the lesson.
Coliena waits for Thais to embrace to observe, then begins the lesson on Air battle weaves. "If there are trees and bushes around you can tie flows of air at different hieghts to knock men of their horses during charges or presute, or trip Trollocs. If there are no trees or bushes in the path of the charge or presute, then you can weave poles to tie the flow of Air to, like so. Make certain that the Gaidin and other soldiers with you know where the ropes of air are to be placed so not to get an undesired effect." She weaves two small poles of Air nearby and ties a flow of air around them. "Of course, in battle the flows used will be at a much larger, and longer scale." She desolves the flows then says, "You may try once or twice, Accepted. To get used to it."
Thais nods and chews on her lower lip, tugging at Air to form the poles, long thick strands wound into thicker sections and places aginst the ground, pushed in a bit to hold them up. A similar flow, unwound she sets between, and it does look mostly like the Sedai's, but it's a first attempt, and they rarely are effecive.
Coliena smiles at Thais' attempt, "Not bad. You may pratice that weave in private as much as you need." She continues the lesson, "For other effective battleweaves, Air can be used as a club, or a whip at close quarters, to defend yourself incase you are in the middle of the battle." She weaves a small whip out of air and uses it against the pratice dummy in the middle of the yard. Then she also uses a club to bang it over the head once. "Also, in case the battle gets so extreme that your life or that of your Warder's or another sister, is in danger, then sharpen the edges of your whip of air and you can use it to cut of limps and decapitate. Spears shaped out of Air can also be used to impale. These weave can also be used against Shadowspawn. The Three Oaths should be thought of at all times before even considering these weaves." She demenstrates these weaves on nothing. No need to completely destroy the poor dummy.
Thais nods, forming each weave as the Sedai demonstrates, but not using it on anything, just trying to imitate what she sees. Soemtimes it looks half-decent, sometimes it doesn't, but it's the best she can manage.
Karaul watches the two reservedly, though keeping his own mental distance, and only truly half listening to the words that Coliena speaks. No need to be completely reminded that none of these things are open to him any longer. He does not completely avoid the situation though, instead just keeping a small mental distance.
Coliena nods and says, "If you wish to pracite those weaves, Accepted, it is always advisable to have an Aes Sedai to oversee you, and never use them infront of students who have not had this class. Also with Air you can create gusts of wind to make volleys of arrows move away from you. Always be aware of your team when you are in battle. It will not be good if you accidently hurt people who were your allies. Though, in some cases, if a greater cause is at risk, lives must be sacrifised. Anyway. Water is next."
Thais nods, allowing her weaves to disappate, holding onto the Source, but not doing anything until instructed.
Coliena launches into her new lecture, "Water can be used in many ways for battle. You can draw water out of a group of people to dehydrate them to the point of fainting. This of course can be fatal if depending on the degree." She deminstrates by drawing water out of the air. "Of course drawing water out of a person will be slightly different, but it would not be good to risk using the weave on a person until you have practiced it a few times on nothing."
Karaul raises a brow curiously as he watches the weave performed, hiding the interest within his eyes quickly, a frown finding him at that moment as well.
Thais nods, leaning forward once more to see the weaves, tilting ehr head, eyes dark with curiosity as she watches the Sedai manipulate the flows of water.
Coliena takes a small breath, then continues, "Also water can be used to cover the ground to make the surface slippery or muddy. To get the water you must draw it from someplace. Deep in the ground, or from a nearby stream or river, or at last option from the air itself. There are always particals of water in the air, you just must gather them together. Like so." She weaves a net of water and collects s small bucket full of water from the air and dumps it on the ground a good twenty paces away.
Thais blinks, looking surprised at the weave. Smiling, a peal of laughter escapes her as she sees you dump the water and she nods vigously...she cn do that.
(This log had to pause for a few days due to the hour it ran to. We decided that they took a break for dinner and finished up the next day, where the second half of this log enters in.)
Karaul mutters softly to Thais as he walks into the yard, a slight frown upon his lips as he speaks. He mutters to Thais, "... had... day Thais. Nothing... be..." he says, fidgeting with his grip upon the book as his eyes slip about the yard in search of Coliena.
Thais nods, as she moves to her seat, settling quietly and turning her attention to the Brown Sister, a smile and a curtsey bringing her from her seat before she returns.
Karaul does not seat himself, instead drawing himself to stand next to the Accepted, folding his arms tiredly over both book and chest. A deep sigh escaping him, he brings his eyes to the Sedai, dipping them respectfully in greeting.
Sionil moves to the side of the yard, away from all
Coliena offers a small smile, though she seems a little lost, "Um... where exactly were we yesterday?"
Thais smiles, "We had just gone over water weaves, Sedai Coliena." She leans forward a bit, reaching into ehr satchel to remove her notebook again, and the queill and ink bottle besides.
Coliena scratches at her head, "And did we finish? What was the last weave... I can't seem to remember. My mind gets like this sometimes." She admits.
Karaul shifts his weight between legs casually, blinking a couple times with a sigh as he prepares himself for the other elements. Sionil sits at the side of the Practice yard, embracing just to watch
Thais smiles, "We had done the air weave to trip opponents, and you showed me a few offensive Air weaves, but we hadn't done any water weaves, though you you did show me the dehydration weave, but I hadn't tried it yet."
Coliena nods, "Of course." She embraces the source and shows the weave again, once more on the air alone so not to unintentionally harm anyone, "Now as I am sure I said yesterday this weave, when used against people, or a group of people, can make them weak, or faint, and if done in too large of amounts can even kill them. But of course you should not use this weave to kill unless it's in last defense of your life, or that of your Warder's or a fellow sister. The weave is also effective against Trollocs, but must be used in larger amounts, because of their size."
Thais frowns, and nods, picking up her pen and making a few notes, then looks back up, "Sedai Coliena, the way in which you pulled the water from the air, can you reverse it to place water into the air?"
Karaul nods slightly, brow furrowing a moment with thought, the expression upon his face seeming to insinuate that he is acting like the words from Coliena were meant from him. A touch of confusion slaps into his eyes, and dropping the book to hand loosely at his side, he does something he's never done in a lesson before, nervousness showing a hint as he does. He slowly raises his hand lightly, darting eyes between both Thais and Coliena.
Thais loks over as Kara raises his hand and she shakes her head, waving away her question, in favour of Karaul's, smiling faintly.
Coliena brushes a lock of blond hair out of her left eye and is about to answer Thais when she notices Karaul's hand going up. She smiles, glad he's at least a little into the lesson. "Do you have a question, Karaul?"
Karaul drops his hand, still appearing a hint nervous, a slight frown twitching on his face as he speaks, hesitant at first. "Umm ... how did you do it? Is is just water, or does it use some fire, and maybe air?" he asks, words coming out a little more fluently as he loses his nervousness.
Coliena chuckles slightly at the young trainee's nervousness, "Well in this weave only water is used. Why do you ask?" She's curious. She wrote a book about this man after all, perhaps she could now add a chapter to it.
"I've been readi..." Karaul says quickly, catching himself halfway through the last word, glancing between Sionil and Coliena for a moment before deciding to continue. He pulls back a hint of his reservation again, shuffling his arms as he speaks. "I was just curious. I never got the chance to consider such a method of attack." he says, seeming to debate his phrasing of the last sentence after saying it, but not changing the words.
Coliena frowns and looks towards Sionil and sighs deeply. Almost annoyed. "Anyway, let's continue. To answer your question, yes it can be, that weave reversed can be used to make mist, or fog. Like so." She reverses the weave and creates a small cloud of fog about a dozen paces away, then disperces it. "Like I said yesterday, fog can be used to blind the enemy and confuse them so that they do not know your exact position or numbers. It can also be used to make a chance difficult incase you wished to escape. Try the weaves a few times, Accepted."
Thais frowns slightly, lifting her eyes to watch the man, then going back to making notes, shuffling abit in her seat. Light, but they make the benches in this yard uncomfortable.
Thais looks up from her notes and nods, setting aside her book, and moving forward, pausing as she finds the water flows and tugs them to ehr, carefully remaking the first weave, the strands close, and then slowly opens it, a few droplets of water forming, but its not very effective, as her weaves before. She frowns and disappates it.
Karaul nods lightly, a frown marring his face as the previous interest that rested within it now dripping from him as eyes drop momentarily to the ground. He takes a slight step back, sighing as he brings his eyes back up to the Sedai, returning to his more simple attention.
Thais continues, pulling on water again, frowning with determination as she forms the weaving again, closing her eyes a moment, perhaps to help herself visualize the picture she has of the weave the Brown Sister demonstrated. This time it works, well, sort of. A slight bit better, but not well enough. but it's a beginning. Disappating that, she turns towards the reverse, this one a bit easier as she just saw it, and she shapes the weave, again openning it, and a small cloud of fog forms above Karaul's head, like a raincloud. The Accepted doesn't even crack a smile as she dissapates it.
Coliena chuckles briefly, then shakes her head, "That was not very nice, Thais. But Karaul is acting like he has a raincloud over his head so perhaps it was approiriate. Now, let us continue. Another way to use water is to cover the ground with water and perhaps make the ground muddy so that a charge or presute is difficult." She shows the weave and makes a spot in the ground very muddy. "To do this you must gather water from someplace. The ground is usually the best place, seeing as in many places there are underground streams, but above ground streams are good, as well as the air itself. There is always water in the air. You just have to collect it." She diminstrates. She frowns, "I think I went over this part yesterday."
Karaul does not notice the small cloud, but a brow does raise as he hears Coliena mention it. This jerks him from whatever thoughts he was immersed in, and he offers only a few simple words in response to her own. "I apologize if my interest in the One Power is not accepted here. You can just tell me I am out of my ... place ... instead of just passing by me." he says, pulling up a little bit of gumption, but destroying it moments later with a huff.
Karaul adds in a more light manner, "Don't let me interupt ..." he says, settling relaxedly into his stance again as he continues to listen, though still without the interest he once had.
Coliena growls loudly, throwing her arms up. Karaul does this to her often, "I didn't pass by you! I answered your question. You can be as interested in the power as you wish to be, nos stop..." She trails off and growls again, stopping herself before she attracts more attention.
Thais nods, picking up the notebook and writing again, moving ehr eyes between book and Sedai noting the weaves, and replying, "You went over the theory, Sedai Coliena, but you didn't show the weavings."
Thais blithlely ignores trainee and Sedai. Not any of her business, and she'd just get upset ehrself. better to pretend it isn't happening.
Karaul does not respond to the Sedai's reaction to his words, just continueing to stand there quietly. His weight shifts to the other leg idly, waiting for the class to continue and soon enough come to an end.
Coliena just sighs and continues, "Yes, well try the weaves a few times if you wish, Accepted. I will be back in a few moments. I am going to get something to drink." Now why the Aes Sedai doesn't just grab a nearby Trainee to get it is another story.
Coliena returns with a cup of tea, sipping on it calmly. She crosses the yard to where the two students are waiting and says with a smile, "Alright, now to continue..."
Karaul turns eyes off of Thais at the Sedai's re-entrance, solidifying his stance some more. "Yes ..." he says lightly.
Thais nods and offers Karaul a smile, "I'll show you later." That said, she turns back to the Sedai who's just now come back and resettles for her lesson.
Coliena frowns briefly, then covers it with a sip of her tea before saying, "Next we go into Fire and Earth. Thais, have you taken advanced linking yet?"
Thais ohs, smiling and noding,t hen looking over towards the Mistress of Novices sitting off in the edge of the practice yard, "Yes, Sedai Sionil taught me."
Coliena nods, "Good. I may need a little help with Earth and Fire. I can barely channel a spark of Fire by myself, and have a very difficult time with Earth, but I am sure even if you are as bad as I am with it it would still be easier then trying to do it alone. Yes?"
Thais nods and smiles, "Of course, Sedai Coliena, I'm more than willing to link with you. I'm weak, but it might help a little bit."
Coliena nods, releasing the source and waiting for Thais to hold herself ready so she can pick up the link. "I will deminstate all the weaves first, then I will let you lead the link and try the weaves for yourself, alright?"
Karaul glances between the two quickly, curiously, pushing down the encroaching discomfort and upsettedness for now. Arms fold more firmly upon his chest, a place to shove that added tension. His breathes come a bit more roughly now as well, biting his lip firmly as he watches and listens.
Thais nods and releases the source, pausing for a moment before she reaches to embrace it, but holds herself back, concentrating, focusing her will on allowing Coliena to pick up the source from her, a look of determination on her face.
Coliena takes up the link after a moment, entire face calm as can be. She does seem slightly effected by the link, but most are. She smiles slightly at Thais, "Alright, we'll start with Earth. Earth weaves can be used to soften armor, and can make them ineffectice against weapons. This can be quite useful in battles against highly armored men."
You paged Thais with 'Through the link you feel that Coliena is a little uncomfortable, but trying to remain calm so not to allow too many of her emotions drift through the link.'.
Thais nods, listening attentively, her expression a bit worried, and curious and eager to learn. The normal expression for this Accepted while she's learning.
Thais pages: Thais is nervous and curious, and a bit annoyed still at Kara, likely.
Coliena asks a Trainee to bring over an old sword she had asked to be set aside and a plate of armor, "Now let me show you the weaves." She wields earth better than she could alone and lessons the strength of the breast plate, making it easy to make holes in and cut through. "And also you can use the same weave on a sword or other metal weapons to make them useless." Again she deminstrates.
Thais watches carefully, leaning forward to study the weaves, making notes in her head to file away for later, reaching out to scrape the breastplate, her nail scratching the steel as if it were a piece of soft lead. She smiles delightedly, and then focuses on the weave worked around the sword.
Karaul smirks amusedly at the work done to the breastplate and the sword, eyes lazily moving from one place to the other as the two do their work. He refrains from speaking up, although his eyes seem to say that he has a question. With a soft sigh, eyes glance towards the other half of the yard, then flick back to the work going on in before him between Sedai and Accepted.
Coliena continues in a soft voice, "Earth can also be used to losen girth buckles on horse saddles and send riders tumbling." She orders a Trainee to bring a saddle over and deminstates on it. "And lastly earth can be used to push up the ground and send small rocks flying to injure those. Some Aes Sedai with stronger ability with Earth can manage to cause larger disruptions in the ground." She demonstrates a small eruption of the ground a few spans away from anyone.
Thais jumps a foot if she jumps at inch as the ground explodes, and she likely would have lost her hold on the source, if she still had control of her touch on it, but she looks visibly shaken, "I've never seen anything like that before!"
Coliena chuckles, "It's just a small one. It won't hurt anything unless it was done directly under the person. But it could b used to startle horses who aren't well trained."
Karaul shrugs lightly, eyes moving from the disruption in the ground to Thais' reaction. "I found it to be a good way of catching a Myrdraal offguard." he says, grinning softly. "It can pack a punch with some additions ..." he says, slowly quieting himself down as Coliena continues.
Coliena chuckles and smiles slightly at Karaul, "Yes, I believe you mentioned that in one of my interviews with you. Too bad you can't show exactly what you did."
Long distance to Thais: Coliena feels a very strong emotion towards Karaul. She cares a lot about him and it shows through the link for a moment before she covers it safely again.
Karaul cannot help but frown softly at the way that Coliena phrases her comment, but does not react to it anymore then that. "Indeed ... it's too bad." he says, a hint of sadness riding those words. He decides not to continue, instead just letting Coliena continue with the lesson. Eyes drop down to his book as he lets it hang at his side, drifting eyes towards the courtyard tiredly for a moment.
Thais blushes bright red, embarrassed that she reacted like that. "I'm sorry. I didnt mean to be so..childish. I'd heard of things like that but." She shakes her head, offering a shy smile to the Sedai, then takes hold of herself firmly.
Thais pages: A deep sense of sadness shows in the link for a moment, then it fades again to a low level hum.
Coliena frowns and mentally hits herself. She didn't mean to phrase it like that. Too late now, "Anyway, now to allow you to lead the link to try the weaves for yourself." Coliena releases the link and then holds the source in waiting for Thais to take it.
Long distance to Thais: Coliena is a little angry with herself.
Karaul does manage a few more words as his eyes rest on their other destination. "I heated the shards of earth with fire, and once attempted to use air to increase their impact." he says, blinking a few times as he tries to remember it, and phrase it differently then he would instinctively ... different then the way he always thought of his talent.
Karaul turns eyes back to the two tiredly, acting as if he had never said a thing, just watching them rather silently.
Coliena smiles slightly towards Karaul and nods.
Thais nods and frowns a bit as her hold on the source falls away, the link breaking. but she nods as she moves to embrace once more, and with a bit of a struggle, brings the Sedai into the link, pausing to make sure she's alright, before she pulls on earth, not that much better in the link than without it, and forms the weave to weaken armour, pressing it into a small portion of the breastplate, then reaching out to poke at the armour, leaving a fingerprint in the metal. A bright smile crosses ehr face, then she turns to the saddle, again forming the weakening weave, hands moving to pull on the buckle, which stretches, the smallest bit, but doesn't break. She pauses, breathing a bit forcefully, exerting ehrself, but determined to do her best for the Sedai. She loks over at the trainee, then weaves the flows for the last weave, pulling earth, and blending it with air, doing her best to try to imitate what the man describes, and opens the weave, the earth exploding again, the dirt flying a bit higher and she looks towards the Sedai and trainee both, as if looking for their opinion or approval.
You sense Thais sends a feeling of comfort after she senses your emotion.
Karaul appears surprised at the attention that he is suddenly garnering, a brow touching upwards with curiousity as he watches the exploding Earth. Hesitantly, he offers the Accepted a nod, raising a hand to rub tiredly at his head, still seeming rather surprised. "Try the fire sometime ..." he says, turning eyes over to Coliena for some kind of approval, whether he gains it or not. His hand still rubs at his head curiously, shaking his head ever so slightly.
Coliena nods and smiles towards both Accepted and Trainee alike, "Very good Thais. Thank you for the insight Karaul. It was quite helpful." She says, "Now we can go into Fire."
Thais nods and smiles, releasing the source, slumping forward a bit, catching her breath as the loss of the source exhausts her for a moment, but she manages to reclaim it, holding herself a moment before, to allow Coliena to lead the link again.
Karaul nods slightly after a moment of thought, the nod increasing a bit in it's determinedness after a thought or two. The small things seem to be hitting him with increased impact now though, Thais' slump forward sending a hail of emotions through his eyes. But he continues to hold it all back, collecting it for reaction later.
Coliena looks a little tired herself, but is determined not to show it to much. She picks Thais' link up easily, used to this, "Fire weaves can be used in more ways then just burning things. Fire can be used to create waves of heat to distort the air, making it difficult for archers to aim and obscuring targets. It can also be used for burning bows, spears, pole arms, or heating swords to the point where they are too hot to be held, or heat armor to the point it can not be worn." She demonstrates the heat weaves on the air first, making the air seem much like a large campfire was burning under it, though without the smoke. Then she heats the nearby armor (the same poor armor that was abused with earth) until the edges and thin areas are redish. She uses water to cool the metal again. Then she sets fire to a wooden spear a Trainee brought over, burning the haft until it's useless. "Good thing he didn't bring one of the good spears, yes?" he gets another for when it is Thais' turn.
Thais nods, watching intently each weave, listening to each word as she focuses on listening more than writing anything down, a giggle escaping her at the Sedai's last words, and she looks towards Karaul for a moment, then back, "it would be a shame."
Karaul grins warmly as he garners the look from Thais, eyes shifting to lay on both women as he offers a comment for this bit of the lesson as well. "I always found that fire could augment a weapon for the better as well." He says, glancing down at his free hand momentarily as he remembers back, eyes focusing on his palm as he tries. Releasing a swift breath, eyes raise to them both again.
Coliena nods, "And lastly you can use basic Fire weaves you learned in classes to light pants on fire to distract, or light dead grass to block the way while you escape." She releases the link again, "Now you can try." She's starting to visibally look tired.
Thais frowns, looking back towards Karaul, but it's not one of annoyance but of curiosity, "How did you manage it, Kara? What did you do?"
Coliena doesn't ignore Karaul as she nods, "Yes. I've heard about some people heating the ends of their sword so that it would go through leather armor and skin more easily. But few use it much. Also you can use fire to light the end of arrows to set fire to things when they are shot. That would require coperation with your warder though. Unless you mean to be an archer yourself."
Karaul frowns slightly as well, eyes once again returning to his hand, opening and closing his palm as eyes concentrate during his attempt to remember. Concentration slips as Coliena speaks, deciding to just nod and abstain from explaining.
Thais nods to the Sedai, and noting her tiredness, embraces the source, but does not pick up the link. She can manage small things with Fire. She weaves the heat weave, a small section of the air, a frown as she releases it, nest moving to the armour, working as hard as she can, heating a small gold coin senction of the armour, chewing on her lip as her holdon the source wavers, then to the new spear, pausing to take a few long breaths, finally forming the last weave, the bottom portion of the wood catching light, a small section, not nearly what the Sedai managed, and she releases quickly, falling forward onto the ground, slipping off of the bench, hands falling palm down to hold her up as best she can, breathing hard.
Karaul frowns, releasing a long breath as he lowers to one knee, bringing a hand to rest gently against her back, moving his eyes between the two, though they rest mostly upon Thais, concerned. "You should not have done so much ...." he says, shaking his head lightly.
Thais frowns, sitting up after a few long breaths, "I won't get anywhere if I never do anything to push myself, Kara. I might as well stand meekly and let a Trolloc slit my from belly to throat. If I don't push myself, I won't become better, and Coliena Sedai is just wasting her time with me. She stood for me at my raising, she helped me, I won't disappoint her!"
Coliena quickly goes through the last half, showing these weaves quickly, "Last is combined weaves. Air and Fire can be used to amplift sound, make a clap of thunder which can startle men and orses, and perhaps if loud enough burst eardrums." She gives an example of a small thunder sound neaby. Not enough to hurt, but enough to startle, "Air and earth can be used to stun a person, when used like so." She weaves a solid disk and smacks it against the dummy. "And last the Air water weave, which chills the air and can make metal shatter, weapons too cold to hold, cause frostbite, or make dew turn to ice to hamper pursuit." She shows how to do that, then says just as fast, "The class is over, you are both dismissed." She turns and walks quickly out of the Practice Yard, looking... odd. Angry but still calm at the same time.
